Pine honey is produced by honey bees that collect honeydew (‘‘basura’’) from a scale insect species (‘‘Marchalina hellenica’’) which live on some certain pine tree species (‘‘Pinus brutia’’ and ‘‘Pinus pinea’’).

Pine honey, a very unique non-wood forest product, is a different type of honeydew honey produced in Turkey. The annual production amount as the average of several years is 15.000-30.000 tons. It comes mainly from Muğla province.

The main reasons any honey from Turkey is considered premium quality on a global scale, are the unlimited summer sun, the biodiversity of the Turkish countryside plus the rich variety of Turkish flora, which includes over 850 species found nowhere else in the world. Scientists and botanists consider Turkey a country with the richest flora in the Mediterranean basin, (more than 7,500 different species of herbs, plants, wildflowers, and trees).

Turkish honey is richer in aromatic substances, compared to other honey produced in other countries, have less humidity, and are consequently denser and richer.
